Amélie alternative poster (2025)
digital media, Procreate
27 x 40 inches
An alternative cover for a masterpiece of a movie. I wanted to capture the film’s warm and eclectic atmosphere.
process
Since the design had so many objects in the frame, I knew color harmony would be a challenge. I decided to approach it differently than usual by doing a detailed black-and-white drawing first to establish the values. I then filled in the colors as well as I could, and played with the hue and saturation to make them cohesive. It took me awhile to decide on a background, but I went with a textured orangey red, which I felt brought the whole piece together and really evoked the feeling of the film.
For the style of this alternate poster, I wanted to include a lot of the film’s quirky and seemingly random elements that are essential to its maximalist feel. This left me with a lot to organize into a pleasing composition. After a lot of thumbnailing, I settled on one that mirrors Amélie’s younger self and adult self. I sketched the rough drawing digitally, directly over the thumbnail, so that I would have more control over the placement.
